Well placed that man!

I recall the area where the shops were to the left was cleared to create a small green space, viz Elthorne Park, Sunnyside Road was all deemed sub-standard housing, these were demolished in the mid 70s, and the Community Garden is now on the North side. Don't get confused by road schemes, these were the 1989 studies when some pro-road planners were going to tarmac everything, with an 'urban motorway' along the Parkland Walk.

NO, NO, NO, everyone said, but that saga is a complete local history lesson.  Local MP Hugh Rossi got rattled over this one, and any use other than a footpath was a no no!

We have part of the Ringway 1, it's the East Cross route from Hackney to Kidbroke ie The A102, briefly the A102M, and the short length of the West Cross Route that runs parallel to the railway at Shepherds Bush.  The testimony that the rest was abandoned is at the White City roundabout, with the exit North walled off and houses beyond!  This was the Roads before Homes ethos that pervaded both the Tories, and to a lesser extent Labour in the 60s and 70s.

Rail was considered separately, the Barren Report of 1974 is where the origins of Overground came from, but nothing was done.  The main road route would have run over a railfreight link, the North London Line, with no significant passenger service, joining the bit that was done at Hackney Wick, where the NLL now goes over the link roads.  One bit Ken got right!

But I was not aware that link roads were considered in this area, but doubtless some links to Ringway 1 would have been needed, and to the Parkland Motorway, had that been built. Thank goodness there has been no major road building since the 1990s.

Looks like broad lane.
Finsbury park ?
Finsbury park  near the bus station

See John T's post: the building at the end of Hazellville Road is the Shaftesbury Tavern, Hornsey Road, (which sometimes has gigs by a local band).

Looks to me like the Middle Lane/Park Road bend??

This scene is looking straight towards the Shaftesbury Tavern.  Junction of Hornsey Road, Hazelville Road and to the left of the Pub, Shaftesbury Road.  Photographer is standing in the middle of Hazelville Rd.  The buildings to the right are still there but to the left all gone.  The bus stop flag is attached to what looks like a 50s style Concrete Utilities lamp standard is for the 41, probably in those days for the bus gricers a Tottenham RTW with a Leyland engine, but I am surmising.  That stop is now a shelter, and there is a humped crossing there now.

I think the description as 1960s is a bit late, I would put it at late 50s, the first car looks as though it is the earlier model of the Jellymould Morris Minor.  But having got the location, to me that was a turn on the 41 from Haslemere Rd to the Archway, as my elderly Aunt preferred that route to the Northern, rather than the 212 to Finsbury Park which only had the Piccy in those days, the 212 then still an RF Single Decker.  212 is the same route as a W7.

So is the shop to the right now Aladdin's?! And Elthorne Park on the left? Used to live close to there but would never have recognised it. Now, of course, it's as clear as day. :)

I'm so impressed you recognised this - never would have got it myself, despite knowing that area really well.

So, yes, that would be Aladdins on the right and the beginning of the turning into what is now Courtald Road.

I'm intrigued by the advert for "Beer" with what looks like two cuddly kittens. ?? Mmmmm.... Duff....
