Carpets or wooden flooring in bedroom
Hi
I am currently undecided whether I should put carpets or hard wood flooring in the bedroom. I keep changing my mind between them. Putting down carpets will be cheaper and it will be warmer in the winter. But I think wood looks a lot nicer. What do you recommend?

I always choose hard flooring instead of carpets. Looks much better and easier to keep clean.

My place came with wood floors for downstairs and carpets upstairs for me. Think that combo works quite well.

If this is an upstairs flat then carpets, firstly because the noise from hard floors will be horrible for your downstairs neighbours, and secondly because your lease is likely to require it. But frankly the first reason should be enough.
This applies not just to bedrooms but to all rooms. Either carpets or wooden floors with very thick rugs everywhere you actually walk.

I agree with you that if you are in an upstairs flat, it's vital to lay down flooring which does not transmit sound to the flat below. There is usually a term in the lease to that effect and, in any event, no one should want to cause noise disturbance to their neighbours. The lease may specify carpet must be used or may say any flooring must not cause transmission of sound. Whatever flooring you have, soundproofing underlay/soundproofing insulation is very important. If you lay a carpet on thin underlay with creaky floorboards underneath, you will still get transmission of sound to the flat below. If anyone suffers from noise through flooring and it is not dealt with amicably, then they should get their freeholder to enforce the terms of the lease so that the flooring is rectified.

Carpet for the bedrooms, wood floor for the reception rooms, tiles for the bathroom.
I should set up an interior design magazine. Then when you have installed all your new flooring, I'll tell you something else instead.
