Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

I live on Cavendish Road and have a fluffy black and white cat. He's somehow ingested poison twice in the past few months. He's had vomiting, diarreah, and hyper-salivation.

He had this in August and then again tonight. I was wondering if anyone else's cats in the Cavendish / Burgoyne Roads have had these symptoms.

Just a warning to cat owners also to be on the lookout and a reminder to gardeners etc that some poisons can be harmful to more than snails and slugs.

Thanks
Rachel

Could be he is eating dead rats that have been poisoned, and ingesting it that way...

Symptoms match slug bait (metaldehyde) poisoning, based on a quick search. The pellets are supposed to have a bittering agent incorporated, but not all cats are sensitive to it, and the recent wet weather may have washed out most of it from the pellets.

Poor thing, hope he's OK

I never found slug pellets particularly effective anyway. Encouraging birds unto the garden is a good line of defence and if you have a hedgehog in the neighbourhood, treasure it as they are voracious slug eaters. Mind you, there is nothing as strangely satisfying as donning a pair of marigolds, filling a small paint can with very salty water and picking them off for burial at sea

Sorry to hear that, Rachel. Hope your cat is ok and thanks for letting us know. I presume you're on Cavendish Rd with a garden backing onto the Burgoyne side.

If you know how far your cat tends to roam, it's probably worth having a word with your neighbours with gardens near you in case someone is inadvertently using a product which is harmful to animals.

Also if you click on the poisoning section on this link below, it has useful information

Thanks all. Vet says they can't find toxins in his system but he has spent the night on a drip. He is well now and on his way home.
