There was a post riot regeneration fund that the council were not allowed to spend themselves. DJ Ben just seems to have been very adept at filling out the forms to get this funding. All very well to say that the council should not have been dabbling in this but it wasn't their money to spend, it came from central government and it had a time limit on it. I think there is still some left, perhaps Ben could help you with an appropriate business case?

I'd like to see how socially responsible these competitors are. Is the food of high quality (taking into consideration their customers health)? And are the hygiene ratings of standard? I'm generalising, but I think you can see by the photos in the 'article' (and I use that word loosely) they aren't exactly enticing. I'd argue that they are competitors at all.   

The article is basically ridiculing someone for agreeing a deal with the council to open somewhere that encourages a healthy alternative to standard chicken shops for a deprived area. Is that so horrendous? Maybe the Sun should read up on what it does for the local community rather than focus on what the guy looks like. For example free meals on Christmas day for the homeless amongst others.

Correctly stated. That it may be a quality establishment is not the issue. But the fact that people talk about how it gives free meals on Christmas shows exactly why this was able to be carried through the Council.

I can virtually guarantee that at the bottom of all this will be something that is flagged on their sign about being not-for-profit to help the people of the area.  

This means DJ what's-his-face presented the Council with a business plan to show how he'd employee X number of locals (versus all the other shops interviewed where everyone just works for themselves) and down came the money. That is important in an area where there were just riots--jobs.

He seems quite clever and probably put himself on the board of directors at £20K / year for meeting once a quarter and that covers the surfing life in Asia. Who knows. It could be looked into though if anyone cared.
