Conscientious Objectors in WW1 in Haringey

The Haringey First World War Peace Forum (HFWWPF) https://hfwwpf.wordpress.com/ is a small working group in north London, researching the conscientious objectors who were associated with the districts of Hornsey, Tottenham and Wood Green (now comprising the London Borough of Haringey).

The aims of the working group are to; research the lives of conscientious objectors and their supporters; promote activities and events within Haringey to commemorate the local conscientious objectors; and develop educational materials and activities to inform the wider public of the legacy of war resistance before, during and after the First World War. The blog is part of the activity to inform the wider public of the work, and an invitation to any one interested in contributing to the future work of the group.

During 2014 the group mounted a street re-enactment of a local anti-war meeting that took place on 5 August 1914 out side the Salisbury pub on Green lanes. This event was well supported by the local traders association and enthusiastically received by the 200 people who attended.

Since then lists of all the COs associated with each of the three local authorities which made up Haringey have been compiled and a number of biographies of individual men written up. Research is still needed to describe all the men. The results so far have been presented in talks in local libraries and to local groups.

An exhibition, in conjunction with the Peace Pledge Union and Haringey Archives, has opened in Bruce Castle Museum, Tottenham to December 2015

They are also planning to stage another event in 2016 to mark the establishment of the three local Military Service Tribunals at Hornsey, Tottenham and Wood Green and a memorial to commemorate the many COs who appeared before them.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the work of the HFWWPF should contact the group by text message on 07531866714 for general offers to help or on 07714265543 for contributions to the biographical research on individual men.

The blog lists the COs by borough

Hornsey            -          132

Tottenham - `  162

Wood Green -    49

and is gradually adding the biographies of each man with links to further information e.g. Pearce Register on IWM, National Archives.
