Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Picture sourced from lordship.n16.com

Haringey Council has just launched a consultation on Dog Control Orders which target irresponsible pet owners.

The move follows complaints from the police, residents and Friends of Parks’ groups of unruly behaviour by dogs in parks and other public spaces.

An Order can state specifically where dogs are barred or where they are allowed as long as they are on a lead. Restrictions can involve whole parks, or highways, or just parts of them, or can encompass the whole borough.

Proposals under consideration include:

  • a borough-wide order on dog fouling
  • a borough-wide order requiring owners to place dogs on leads where the dog is out of control or causing a nuisance
  • an order to have dogs on leads on the public highway, publicly accessible land, some smaller parks or some areas where there are marked pitches (when in use)
  • exclusion of dogs from playgrounds and similar areas
  • orders to include land controlled by Homes For Haringey

Dog Control Orders cannot be introduced without good reason, such as complaints from residents or police, and there must continue to be reasonable access to a place where dogs can be exercised.

Once an Order is in place, the penalty for committing an offence is a maximum fine of  £1,000 or a Fixed Penalty Notice of £80, issued by police or council  and Homes for Haringey officers. Failure to pay the fines  can result in  arrest and imprisonment.

Consultation begins today,June 11 and ends on July 20.  Details are on the website at haringey.gov.uk/dogcontrol and queries can be emailed to frontline.consultation@haringey.gov.uk. Enquiries or requests for a paper questionnaire can also telephone: 0208 489 8420.

The consultation results will be published on the website and a report will be submitted to Cabinet in September for consideration and a decision.

Hackney Council is also consulting on this issue over the Summer. Their consolation can be seen here.

I have just completed the survey. May I suggest whether you a for or against further dog control measures that you complete it too.

Just wondered why Ducketts common is not included? or did i miss it? , I was there on Friday and a few dogs were running near the gym without leads.
