Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A while back there was a thread around whether the problem of dog mess could be helped by DNA testing. The company who have been piloting a project in Barking and Dagenham sent me the following email which they gAve me permission to reproduce here. I remember someone from the Friends of Harrington Passage was particularly keen but I can't remember who.....

Subject: Invite to Barking and Dagenham Dog DNA pilot conference.

Good afternoon,

As you are aware London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council have recently piloted a new service that assessed the effectiveness of dog DNA registration as a measure to reduce uncollected dog waste being encountered in public open spaces.

As a result of the overwhelming interest that has been received from local authorities and other groups from across the UK, Barking and Dagenham Council will be hosting a seminar on June 30th, 2016 where the results of the pilot will be presented http://www.streetkleen.co.uk/seminar---better-cleaner-safer.html .

The event will begin with a welcome from Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of the Barking and Dagenham Council, who will explain why they undertook the pilot and how it aligns with the council's priorities and objectives around improving civic pride and encouraging social responsibility.

We will be sharing the results of the council's pilot service: looking at the societal health benefits of the scheme, how compliance with dog DNA registration will be encouraged within the framework of existing legislation, how the service is delivered and how its funded in an environment of challenging economic times for local authorities.

Given your historical interest in this service development I would like to extend an invitation for you to attend this event. Bookings are made direct with London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council by sending the attached booking form to them at participation@lbbd.gov.uk .

I look forward to seeing you at the event.

 Kindest regards,

Gary Downie

Antoinette. It was me, and Pete Lorimer. We have met Gary and we are following the work Barking are doing with his technology. As you may remember dog poo was the top of the list of issue for Passage Users during our survey a year ago and we are actively investigating different ways of trying to tackle the problem.

When we asked folks from Haringey I believe they were also watching the results of the Barking pilot, but were not yet committed to a course of action. In the mean time Pete Lorimer has been exploring other options, such as how to make it an offence to not carry a plastic back (the means to clear up after your dog). We hope such an approach will help begin a discussion with the council and focus attention.

Obviously we continue to explore other options! All idea welcome.

I like Waverley Council's intervention in Sydney's Bondi area, with dog waste bags made publicly available, simple.
