Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Our dog, Maple, was attacked while out with our dog-walker in Barratt Gardens Wood Green, on Monday.  The owner was calling his black pitbull/staffie, who ignored him and ran towards Maple and attacked her. The owner was with a friend who also had a dog, and the second dog then joined in. It was extremely traumatic for both Maple and our dog walker, who thought they were going to kill her! After the attack, the owner walked off with both dogs, and the friend gave his first name and address, saying the other man and dog were staying with him at the moment. I have spoken to the police, who say they won't do anything unless a person has been attacked.  I can't bear the thought of this dog being allowed to go around unmuzzled and free to carry on attacking other dogs (or people??!). Does anyone have any advice?

By the way, Maple needed stitches and was distressed for a couple of days but now seems fine!

Very sorry to hear about Maple. The law does seem to be only concerned with people and/or assistance dogs. But at the same it is against the law for a dog to be perceived as being 'dangerously out of control'.

It is very sad when people do not realise the serious consequences from this lack of training. His dog needs help in his reactivity, and neglect to do this could lead to awful consequences for other dogs and for this dog too.  Here is the link to the Dog Law relating to this.

Hope Maple is ok.

You're very welcome!

Hopefully Maple stays safe and he's prompted to do some reward-based training with his dog.

I don't know if you have pet insurance that covered the cost of the vet but if not I would try to recover the costs plus a small amount for "distress" via the small claims court - in my experience hitting people in the pocket is the best way of focussing their attention

Well you should send them a copy of the bill and ask them to pay it. I suppose you need to decide how much effort you want to expend over it all.
