Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I noticed recently that this premises had gone from a very busy practice working well outside their advertised hours to a very quiet place. I googled the name and found that they also had a practice in Birmingham. I then discovered in "The Telegraph" dated 4/5/12 that "The Sunday Times" had an exposé on the good doctor along with a dentist. From this information the two men were arrested and questioned on suspicion of offences contrary to the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. I do not have access to "The Sunday Times" website but they ran the story on 22/04/12 and had a follow up on 06/05/12.

On Dralimaoaweys.com I see that the London premises were shut from last April for a couple of months due to a "family emergency." Fear not though as the premises is now open again on Sunday 10am to 6pm and Tuesday 1pm to 6pm. Dr Mao will not be there himself but there will be a ...."Somali specialist doctor working on the London offices until Dr Mao returns. The same services will be offered as before. Plus completion and signing of any forms (e.g. Taxi medicals, housing support letters, fitness to travel, EHIC and many more)."

FGC is illegal in this country isn't it? Time for a call to the Old Bill...

It is illegal and The Police are already involved but nobody has been convicted yet and the services provided now are, I would presume, legal.

Well spotted, do follow up to police as above. This would be the first prosecution in the UK. Let's see him banged up for life if he was doing FGM here. There have been 100 prosecutions in France. Getting evidence must be a nightmare.

He should be on the GMC register so that may be one place to look for more info.

I've been made aware that this doctor is now suspended from the GMC Register.

I've verified this. You can check the GMC register for yourself at www.gmc-uk.org

Sorry to put a downer on the thread, and I think it's fantastic that you spotted this. But can I suggest that you don't talk about possible action on a public forum, you don't know who might see it and therefore start covering their tracks until the "heat's" died down (at which stage they can resume their abhorrent practice).

I think as Pamish pointed out there isn't much of a history of taking on these people legally. This was action the police had to take as they were provided with evidence by "The Sunday Times". That will probably be their quota for a couple of years.
