Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A driver who fly-tipped oil and rubbish into a residential street (http://ow.ly/1uBCkY & http://ow.ly/1uBCMU) has been electronically tagged and banned from leaving his home between 1pm and 11pm each day for two months.

On 28th June at Wood Green Crown Court, Frederick Monk of Tottenham, was found guilty of fly tipping. Monk received a 12 month community order attaching the tagging requirement and was told a breach of the curfew or the order could result in imprisonment.

The sentence related to an incident in Colina Mews N15 in May last year when an oily black liquid was dumped with other rubbish onto the street.

The fire inspector declared the spillage as a chemical incident and several residents had to be evacuated from their homes.

With help from local witnesses and Haringey's enforcement team, police tracked down the owner of the vehicle and also found a trail of black liquid leading to an open backed lorry parked nearby.

Haringey's Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

"It is unbelievable that someone could think it alright to deposit this mess onto a residential street and get away with it. I thank those residents who helped us trace the culprit and pledge that we will do all we can to prevent rogues like this from defacing our streets, not to mention the inconvenience to all those people who had to leave their homes."

It's right and fair he should be curfewed as punishment, but I'm wondering what good reason was made not to fine him. If he was profiting by dumping illegally then he should be hit in his pocket as well. Maybe even confiscate the van used ? How about being made to clear up other flytips ? (Oops i'm sounding like someone i don't like).
Maybe he'd managed to look very broke to the council. I'm very impressed with enforcement at the moment *tidies front garden*.
Are we sure it's the same guy? The fly-tips Hugh flags were in December 2009 and January 2010, not May 2010 (though may of course have been the same guy).
So what stopping him fly tipping between midnight and noon? Seriously, this is just silly..
Exactly, i do all my fly-tipping between midnight and Dawn, i find it much quieter then. I think a hefty fine would be much more appropriate, after all that's the underlying reason for most fly-tipping anyway, avoidance of disposal fees etc. It would be good to send out a clear message that it'll cost a lot more to dispose illegally....
