But Gilts (UK government 10 year bonds) are yielding less than 1% for the first time ever? We were never going to pay for this with taxes or savings... I smell a rat. There are a lot about at the moment.

People have been paying the German government for the privilege of loaning them money for a while now. The Bund (equivalent in Germany) dipped below ZERO last week, not ONE.
