THERE is scheduled at 2PM today a Cabinet Member signing about halving residential street sweeping.
The report will seek Cabinet Member approval for a change in residential street sweeping from twice weekly to once a week. The report will also seek Cabinet Member approval for the removal of recycling banks, where they are underused and/or attract fly tipping. These proposals form part of the £2.8m savings identified from the Veolia Integrated Waste Management Contract over three years, as part of the Council’s Medium Term Financial Strategy.
The reduction proposals—that include reduction in the number of recycling banks by 80%—are billed as a 'new approach'.
The Council paper says that, "The benefits of this approach are that … it is easy to understand and explain" and that "All residents are given an equal opportunity to prevent litter being dropped".
With benefits of this magnitude, it's astonishing that the proposals weren't brought forward earlier.
However there's a small fly in the ointment; officers have spotted a disadvantage:
There is a risk that levels of cleanliness are reduced …
