Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I don't think we missed anything but Harringey and their agency clearly did. Now we know 'Haringey is an attitude...'

Brand Haringey, claims overhaul "communicates who we are today"

During 2015 we had a town hall making huge cuts to services, so what did they do shell out £86,000 on re-branding itself,
to demonstrate it is “more than just place. It's an attitude”.

People living in Haringey, reacted with fury to its quirky new red logo, part of an overhaul that the borough claims “communicates who we are today”.

The new draft logo, leaked to the Evening Standard & Ham & High, replaced the last logo – adopted just eight years earlier – whose ‘crackle’-style logo celebrated the broadcasting heritage of Alexandra Palace in the borough.

Haringey, is under pressure to make £70 million in spending cuts by 2018, including to services used by vulnerable people. Haringey defended the re-brand, and at the time refused to confirm if the leaked letter was the final design.

A film, that cost £20,000 to make, promoting the borough’s strengths, was screened. An additional £40,000 was spent on ‘brand strategy’ by Haringey Borough Council.

The council also laid out plans to spend nearly £8,000 on major council signage, and just over £7,500 on staff ID cards with the new branding.

Still the original logo exists in Highgate Village, a lack of continuity in branding terms, and what does the Haringey coat of arms and logo on the mayoral chain look like? It also has the heraldic motif, (within the hanging badge made out of 18 k gold and enamel,) with the text "The London Borough of Haringey," or does it simply say 'Im in?'

Council papers released gave a list of justifications for the re-brand,
sentences beginning with “I am in because…”

The final strap line reads: “I am in, because Haringey is much more than just a place. It’s an attitude. Are you in?”

A line from the launch event for the new campaign (to promote the borough’s values) – included using “taxpayer money as carefully as we would our own.”

The reveal of the logo was launched in mid Sept of 2015, together with
a film, that cost £20,000 to make, promoting the borough’s strengths.

An additional £40,000 was spent on ‘brand strategy’ by the council.

On reading the extract from an FOI below, is like reading Space Odyssey 2000 dialogue, 'what are you doing to the computer Dave?'

And FOI doesn't recognise social media:

Twitter: Nothing trendy abt spending £87k of taxpayers money on someone typing 'Haringey' in Word when ppl eat from foodbanks

Twitter: I love living in Haringey but that new logo makes me cringe!

Dear Haringey Borough Council,

Please can you investigate whether I was given accurate information in this response.

On the 23rd July 2015 Mr Jones said no decision had been made. Within 8 weeks not only had a decision been made, it had been actioned and already implemented.

1. Please can you inform me whether the council is changing its logo or is planning to change its logo or is having discussions to change its logo? Please state which.

Response: Our response on 29 September 2015 was : Discussions are ongoing about a possible change of identity, but no decision has been taken.

On the 23rd July 2015 you asked us to investigate whether you had been given accurate information, as within 8 weeks from the response not only had a decision been made, it had been actioned and implemented.

I can confirm that the Cabinet Member paper was signed by Councillor
Goldberg on the new brand on 18 September 2015. This is the decision point, with implementation on 21 September. Before this we only had a proposal, hence the FOI response on 23 July was entirely accurate.

Close enquiry

(Cllr Joe Goldberg, is the cabinet member for economic development, LBH)
