Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey serves up amazingly well-designed event for us to say how we want to shape Harringay

Those members who've been around for a few months will know that I've been pushing the Council to use new community consultation advice from central Government to work with us to create a better Harringay. We've called it a charter - but don't let that put you off. (Read more here if you'd like).

I've been insistent that the vision for Harringay should be built by the people for the people. That means consultation. And I've not had much faith in Haringey consultations.

Then last week, at a meeting with the Council what sounds like a brilliant consultation event was rolled out in front of my eyes.

Below is the last draft I have of a postcard that'll be going out to every house in Harringay soon to advertise the event.

What do you think Harringay Green Lanes should be like in 5 years time?

Right now, it seems like Harringay Green Lanes is full of energy. People are saying that they’re ready to build on the strengths of their neighbourhood and create an even better place, one they can really feel a part of.

So we’ve organised a day where locals can come along share views, develop exciting ideas and bend our ears. Please help us to shape the Harringay Green Lanes you want.

It’s your neighbourhood! Come along to the Cyprus Kitchen, 628 – 630 Green Lanes, N4, on 21st April between 2pm and 8pm. Join in as much (or as little) as you like.

  • Have your say wall
  • Interactive feedback workshops
  • Big Brother style Video Box
  • Roving Cameraman
  • Meet local celebrities – get autographs
  • Kids activities – balloons, poster competition and more
  • Refreshments and gifts will also be provided!!
  • And even some prizes – cinema tickets, shopping vouchers and more.

If you can’t come on the day, you can still fill in the questions on this postcard and send it back (it’s freepost) by xxxx date

Questions

What are the good things about living in Harringay Green Lanes?

What three things do you think would make Harringay Green Lanes an even better place to live?

What should Harringay Green Lanes be like in 5 years time?

What concerns do you have about living in Harringay Green Lanes

To enter the draw for shopping vouchers, dinner for two, and other prizes, put your name and address here. The draw will be on xxxx date and we will notify all winners.

The local celebrity is due to be a Tottenham footballer.

Okay, it's still a consultation, but I have to say I'm impressed. I think Councillor Canver, Dasos Maliotis, Janette Gedge and the team have done a wonderful job putting it together. They shoud be proud of what they've designed.

So now it's up to us. For my money, we have no right to complain about what's been designed. It deserves to be successful. As many of us as possible now need to ensure that we get ourselves and our neighbours down there and get behind this great opportunity we have to shape our neighbourhood.

Pray God, that the event tastes as good as it looks.

I'll second that, Hugh. Looks like they mean business putting this amount of effort into the planning.
This all sounds very promising. Good on you, Hugh.
Good stuff.
I've not been a member of HoL that long, so this may have already been talked about but has anyone contributed to Haringey Strategic Partnership's Community Engagement Framework consultation? See link:http://www.haringey.gov.uk/index/community_and_leisure/hsp/framewor...

I've not read it myself, so the prevailing opinion may be that it's just more Council rhetoric but the Cyprus Kitchen event sounds promising. LSPs (Local Strategic Partnerships) can be tremendously cumbersome beasts that get weighed down by their own jargon but they do give the community and voluntary sector the opportunity to engage meaningfully with the private and public sectors.
Great question John.

I posted on this issue here. As you'll see Councillor Cooke came on line, picked the issue up and offered a meeting.

A group of us had a very constructive meeting wioth him earlier in the week.
Can I ask that further discussion on this is added to the original engagement consultation post I juist pointed to. Thanks.
Just to say that there is still time to comment on this - follow this link which will be open til May 18th.
Thanks Alison, I was feeling guilty as I couldn't attend and lost my postcard. I've responded now!
Yes, thanks for the heads-up on this Alison. I wasn't able to make it along on the day, but have now completed the questionnaire. Here's hoping our comments will be taken into consideration in the long-term!
