Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Harringay based bicycle project for migrants; open meeting tonight!

Apologies for the repost
Dear friends,

I would like to invite you all to an open meeting about the future of the Baisikel project at Giuseppe Conlon House, 49 Mattison Road N41BG, on Wednesday 24th of February at 7PM.

The purposes of this meeting will be to:

  1. Discuss and formulate a plan for a new lease of life for Baisikel
  2. Establish a steering group of local people to manage the project

The Baisikel project [Baisikel@weebly.com] was set up in 2011 in a workshop space provided by London Catholic Worker at Guiseppe Conlon House. The project refurbishes donated bikes to give to destitute migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

Baisikel has steadily developed over five years (the attached document gives background and details). However, the project has now reached a critical moment when the relevance of its original aims need to be reassessed in the light of changing circumstances.

We hope that involving interested local people in an open discussion about how the project could evolve and continue to meet community needs, and especially the needs of destitute migrants, will help to initiate a new lease of life for Baisikel. Undoubtedly the workshop comprises a community resource which could be made use of in different ways. We have already begun actively to think and discuss how Baisikel might evolve in current conditions, and have had meetings with volunteers at London Catholic Worker.

We believe that there is in the locality a wealth of expertise, experience, skills and knowledge which could help Baisikel develop a range of new activities, and that there are people who would be willing to take responsibility as part of a Steering Group for managing a new stage of its existence. The following skills and roles will be needed:

Fundraising and budgeting; Publicity and communications; Coordinating volunteers; Bike mechanics; Experienced cyclists able to provide cycle safety and proficiency training; Electricians and carpenters (if the workshop is to diversify); Logistics (collection of donations and deliveries of bikes etc); Management of workshop and equipment.

Please let me know if you are planning to attend or if you can't make it but would like to be involved. Feel free to also forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. I've attached two documents with more information about the project.

Con, I have a boys/man's bike to dispose of - it needs some attention but is useable if you want it. I think we are already contacts on this site, if you need to get in touch.

Hi Maddy

Yes I will email you.

Very commendable. I too have a man's bike to donate -it also needs some attention. If you'd like it, happy to cycle it to somewhere local... If you want it, can you pm/connect/link with me so we can arrange (I've sent invite)?

Eugene
