Has anyone replaced Sewer pipe under their house ?
Hi All,
I have noticed a faint but steady sewerage smell in our lounger since we removed the laminate flooring and have gone back to floor boards.
I'm assuming that the main pipe under the lounge is leaking. I called a few plumbers to see about CCTV inspection of the pipe and possible replacement and the prices were eye watering.
Has anyone had a similar issue or had the pipe fixed / replaced ?
Any advice would be welcome

I had a leaking water pipe. My Nationwide house insurance fixed it and gave me £950 for the minor damage to the wood flooring.

We are in the process of having it done. I would suggest that you first contact your house insurance company. We had an inspection carried out because of possible subsidence and one of the things they found was that the sewer had cracked because of ground movement. Luckily for us the entire job is covered by insurance. You're right though, we looked at the price the insurance company are paying for the work (including surveyors fees, CCTV inspection and making good the area at the front of the house once the work is done) and it was staggering!

Michael did they take up floor and dig up pipe or did they manage to insert a new pipe inside the old one I.e reline it ?

The plan is to dig up the front garden area of the house and feed in a sleeve to reline to existing pipe. Well, that's the plan.

My experience was similar to Michael's. A cctv survey found some misalignment in sections of sewer pipework that runs under the house from back yard to the street. The problem was resolved by inserting a lining without the need to excavate any part of the route. Our house happened to have a sewer access cover in the front basement and the new lining runs from there to an access cover in the backyard.

As well as your insurance, you might also want to check if this is your pipe or the water boards... when we had a problem right outside our front room window, Thames Water did the work...mind you that was an incoming water pipe...not a problem with the sewer pipe going out. Still might be worth asking the question though...

Just an observation but given that the smell has occurred since the laminate has been removed thus providing to gaps in floorboards and enhanced passage of air from underground, there is a possibility that the smell could be due to dead decayed rats. Not a nice thought but a possibility. If you are not sure of the smell assorted with dead rats then a rodent exterminator with experience would know straight away. If the smell is now faint it may smell a bit like cooked cabbage.
