Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I need a couple of cables for my home office to hook my computer and printer into the network.

Am I safe using something described as "3M Cat6 Shielded Network Cable, 3 Meters, FTP, Grey Ethernet Patch Lead" (my emphasis). Is a patch cable the same as an Ethernet cable???

Thanks

They do the same job.
When you use the terminology "patch" cable, sometimes it refers to the length.. patch cables are typically less than 1m but since you have already said its 3m youre fine.
Youre unlikely to need cat6 for a home office but if youre not worried about the cost being higher than cat5 it will still work fine.

Thanks. I have just had the place wired with CAT6 cabling (just done a loft conversion and put a new office room in.

Will CAT5 not act as a throttle on network info transmission speeds?

Current limitation will likely be with your switching gear and other devices. Youve future proofed yourself though.

Yes, I have. That was the plan, though I am sure it will be out of date relatively soon.

The switch is a gigabit switch if memory serves. That is new, so should be up to snuff.
