Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have an old duvet which is well past its best and shedding its feathers somewhat. Can anything useful be done with it or is the recycling bin the only possible fate?

Pet shelters are always happy to receive old bedding.

Thanks Sarah. I could try the Wood Green Animal shelter, I guess.

the Harmsworth RSPCA hospital in finsbury Park used to pick up bedding

Haringey don't take old pillows and duvets for textile recycling; they just go into landfill. Don't know why - perhaps their bulk or some kind of infection control?

This is disappointing as we have a couple of feather duvets which will soon need renewing. I'd assumed they could be somehow recycled.

I'd like to follow this up, Maddy. Can you please tell me who in Veolia or the Council gave you this information? When? And if they explained the reasons?

You can have your duvets topped up. Here's one that does it, not exactly local, but I am sure there are some in London too.

Thanks, Anette. Cost-wise, probably worth it for a down duvet, but not the feather one I have in mind.

I have, a couple of times now, successfully turned my old feather duvets and old feather pillows into floor cushions.  I did as much a couple of weeks ago and bought a ready made 36x36cm floor cushion cover for it to go into.  One single feather duvet + two feather pillows = a mega filled floor cushion.

S :-)

But very heavy - I did it once and turned the garden into "snow" in the process. Where did you get the large cushion cover? I need one and can't find one that size.

Have sewing machine and loads of pieces of material in cupboard.  Invite me for a coffee tomorrow morning and I'll tell you all about it!

Hi Maddy
Yeah, I know that snow effect in the garden... but the end result is fabulous!  I paid £15 (including p&p) for two 24" x 24" cushion covers off of ebay - "thecushionandthrowco" about a month ago - very pleased with the purchase :-)

Wasn't there a post (maybe a year ago?) from one of the Churches on the Ladder looking for bedding etc. for their homeless/refugee shelter.  I'm sure they would be glad of them...
