Fascinating, thanks Alex

Hey Alex.. thanks for this..   I've haven't forgotten that chat..

Great to hear from you, Stephen. I'm away for a week from tomorrow . How about the week starting 15 August? I'll get in touch nearer the time if that's ok.

Really interesting Alex. It also highlights the huge demographic changes in Paris since the late 70s. When I first started going there (about 79) the 13th (where Tolbiac metro is) and Les Halles were definitely not on the tourist map. Now the wealthy live in the Butte-aux- Cailles and work at the Rive Gauche business quarter or lecture at ParisTech and Les Halles is a (rather horrible) shopping centre.

As I understand it, the original Les Halles crew was actually from Colombes, a working class banlieue to the north east of Paris, it's just that they hung out in Les Halles on a daily basis. They might have even had a squat there at some point, but I'm not sure about that - will find out.

I think in France, upmarket neighbourhoods tend to be central, while the suburbs are poor. Exactly the opposite of Britain - though of course, the UK is becoming more like France now as people are being priced out of the inner cities.
