Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all,

Thanks to a grant from Youth Music, we have a new programme starting at New River Studios which offers free instrument tuition to young people (up to the age of 18) on Saturday mornings. I've posted an event, but as we're just putting the nuts and bolts of it together now, I thought I would open a forum post to invite any thoughts on the subject.

Initially we'll be offering tuition in guitar, drums, bass, keyboards and vocals and there will be opportunities for recording, live performances and other collaborative projects. We also have a programme for young bands to get free rehearsal time every Monday and Wednesday from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

If anybody has any feedback or ideas, we'd love to hear it. I know HoL probably has more parents than young people among its users, and we're keen to hear from them too. It would be great to have a thread that people can contribute their thoughts too. What do the young musicians you know need?

Many thanks in advance and best wishes,

Ellis

Hi Ellis, well done with your grant from youth music. Would be good to know a little more about which organisation you are from and where you are situated. Also the age of kids you want to work with and how you are currently working with the borough music provision if at all. Thanks Anna

Hi Anna,

Yes, thank you Anna. All good questions.

I manage New River Studios CIC, a privately run, not-for-profit arts' organisation, which manages a  a converted furniture warehouse on Eade Road (at the Seven Sisters Road end). We provide facilities to local artists and the community, and we operate as a platform for funded programmes. We are not directly funded by anyone ourselves, and we keep our doors open thanks to income derived from our cafe and from our events.

Music Space North, the new programme, will be run in collaboration with an organisation called Community Music, based in Tower Hamlets. They actually won the funding and have a good track record in this field.

We do work with the borough provision for music for young people. We are part of the Haringey Music Education Hub and work with various parts of Haringey Council in this regard. We've also approached schools and youth clubs in the past, and will be doing so again for this round of programmes. Our other partners include UK Music, Homes for Haringey, Project 20:20 and Beggars' Group.

This programme is open to all young people aged between 11 and 18. Rehearsal Rooms (our other programme) is available up to the age of 25, but is limited to Haringey residents.

Many thanks for getting in touch Anna. I hope this answers your questions.

Best wishes,

Ellis
