Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Friends of Parks Forum are organising a petition against the cuts in Haringey park staff. There is a copy of the petition attached as a .doc at the bottom of this post. Return completed petition forms to Dave Morris at the address below.

Here is the message:

Hi all

At a special Friends of Parks Groups meeting with the Council last week the general feeling was that if the cuts are not reversed our green spaces will be plunged into a serious decline in maintenance and management. Already in the last few weeks many groups have reported increasing failure to provide adequate staff to clear litter. And this is before the threat of further redundancies. Some local on-site staff depots are also facing closure.

However, parks staff, along with most Council workers, are currently being consulted on the Council's plans for compulsory redundancies (Council decision is likely to be made on May19th). Members of the main Union, UNISON, have had a vote are considering industrial action. So now is the time to let the Council know what Friends Groups, Residents Associations and the public think!  Park users are already beginning to take action - including an action group formed in Bruce Castle Park who've done their own petition to defend their staff and staff depot, a litter collection/photo press release in Markfield Park to embarrass the Council into action, and something similar in Fairland Park.

The Friends Forum have now produced a protest petition (see text below), attached. Please get loads of people to sign it if you can, and return it to me, or bring along to the next Friends of Parks Meeting on Saturday May 7th, 10am at Bruce Castle Museum. We will then publicise it and use it to appeal to the Council to use the current consultation exercise to re-consider their position.

best wishes

Petition Text:

Haringey Friends of Parks Forum

NO TO CUTS IN HARINGEY PARKS!
No cuts to staffing, maintenance budgets or on-site depots. Support our parks? workers!

We the undersigned are extremely concerned about, and object to?

- the slashing of local park budgets by over 50% (£1m)
- the threat of drastic cuts to the number of staff working in our parks. Staff are currently being consulted over compulsory redundancies - we send them our support.
- plans to close a number of parks depots or lease them out to street cleaning teams

We believe this will make our green spaces unsafe, and return them back to the shocking neglect of the 1980/90s. We call on the Council to halt the plans.

Hang on a minute, my understanding is that the Parks Hygiene team have been cut from 15 down to 5 already.
This was also what I'd been told by someone who has a contact in the department (or possibly an ex-contact - I believe they were themselves affected by the same "cull"). But we certainly don't want any more to go...

Angry Bruce Castle park users are all signing a petition already - over 200 have signed so far.  The street cleaners have taken our park keepers hut, I was in the park at 7.30am this morning when the cleaners were driving their private cars across the grass to leave the depot,  I was furious - its leaving marks on the grass and there are bye laws at each entrance prohibiting unauthorised vehicles. it is no longer a tranquil safe place when you are dodging traffic and breathing petrol fumes. Please please unite to save our historic park and our devoted park keepers that have been part of our community for over twenty years SIGN, SIGN please .... SIGN!

I walk my dog every morning at 6am and since about the middle of april, Veolia contract cleaners have been standing (walking or sitting around) in their brand spanking new protective clothing and hi vis jackets.  What they are not doing is clearing the litter!

Every day, especially after a gloriously sunny weekend, it is left and builds up from the day before. The skip in the depot is full and remains so.

I'd like to know what Veolia are being paid to do and why the litter is not being cleared.  I'd also like to know why it hasn't remained in the very capable care of the park wardens who never let the litter build up and had usually cleared it long before most people set foot in the park.

Now every day, I find more litter and it is disgusting, annoying and completely unacceptable.

I am fearful that the park will soon revert to how it used to be and that would be a great shame ofter all the recent investments and the popularity that the park now enjoys.
