Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I was working in the front room today when I heard the letterbox go. When I went to check there was a screwed up parcel delivery card, saying I had been out and need to pick up the parcel myself. There had been no attempt to knock or ring the doorbell.

Then I realised that this was a part needed for my plumber to repair the toilet this evening, which had been sent 'tracked' in order that it arrived in time. So now not only do I have to drive to Tufnell Park tomorrow to get it, but have to cancel the plumber put up with a non-working toilet until next week.

A neighbour had the same thing happen yesterday, so whether it is a rogue local delivery person, or general practice I don't know. I don't care how under pressure they are - this is not remotely a working service.

As well as this, I have recently been getting letters including Christmas cards bent in half to shove them through the slot - I asked the postman yesterday not to do it, but today it happened again.

The same for me too.  I might have been upstairs at the time, but you'd think they'd give a decent knock, wouldn't you.  Apart from anything it makes no blinking sense....taking it back to the depot means more paperwork than delivering it.  Could I be really cheeky and cadge a lift up there when you go.  My mum's Christmas present is languishing up there!

I'm going tomorrow on my way somewhere else, but if you give me the card and some form of ID to back it up, I'll pick it up for you.

Honestly, even in the time it took to fill out the card, they could have rung the bell. Seems like it might be a particular problem on this street.

Just took in a delivery for next door. The postie had a good ring at their place before coming to ours and asking if we would mind taking it in for them. Our postman is always like this - and friendly and polite- so it really does seem a bit of a postcode lottery.
Thanks so much Maddy, that's really kind of you. I feel like breaking into song "neighbours; everybody needs good neighbours!"

They routinely bend cards in half - I think it's because they roll all the letters for one address into one tube and then try and bung them all through together.  It makes me really sad when someone's gone to a lot of trouble to find a nice card.  I also routinely get all the post (bent in half) for the Mews block round the corner.

Yes it's a matter of stuffing it through as fast as possible using one hand only, I think. It's damage to personal property really.

Printed on outside of large envelope - " PHOTOGRAPHS - DO NOT BEND "

Handwritten message - " Oh yes they do "

I've found a ready-written card dumped in my recycling bin - when I asked the postie he said they write them all out at the sorting office beforehand. I suspect it's temptingly quicker to do that, shove, then walk on, than wait up to a couple of minutes per parcel, on the round.

We had the same thing today also.

That's strange - the postman usually knocks twice!

Just got a missed delivery card with my post 10 minutes ago as well.  No attempt to ring the bell.  Nothing filled out on the card.  This is in Crouch End so I'm guessing there's a broad policy or different postman.  The usual guy wouldn't do that - he's far too nosy.

v

eta: even more annoying - I can't arrange re-delivery because I don't have an addressee or a reference so that means a marathon trip to the sorting office with fingers crossed they can identify the parcel from the QR code on the card.

Further to the above, our regular nosy (and for once we're grateful) postman returned the next week and it turned out to have been a card stuffed through a letterbox in error - there was no parcel.  It's a damned good thing I never made the trek to Tufnell Park.
