Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Rubbish....
describes a recurring problem on our street and also HC's response in dealing with it.
The weekend before last someone from one of the houses on our street - or possibly (probably) the landlord or someone employed by them - emptied a load of old furniture onto the pavement outside their house. This consisted of a mattress, part of a bed base, a broken chest of drawers and bin bags.
I reported this to HC via "My Account" on the Tuesday (20th June).
Nothing had happened by the Thursday so I contacted the council by phone and was advised it would be dealt with that day.
The next day I came home from work and found that all the rubbish was still there; by now some of it had tumbled down further with the result that at least half the pavement was blocked. So I picked up every item and threw them all back into the front garden.
I then checked the My Account service and to my amazement found that the problem had been "solved" on 20 June (the day I reported it). Of course, this was untrue.
This weekend a mattress was put outside another house in our street. By the next day it had fallen over so that the entire pavement was taken up. I thought of contacting the council but thought "what's the point?" and so picked it up instead and heaved it back into the front garden.
The rubbish I referred to at the beginning is still where I left it in the front garden of the property even though it is blocking two or three of the bins in the garden. What can I do about this? It makes the street look disgusting as does the mattress in the front garden of the other property. If I report it they may get it taken away but why is HC not proactive about these matters? Why are they not following up the dumping of rubbish that in the end I had to sort myself? And why do the majority of local residents not give a **** apart from me??

I share your frustration. All HC do when we report via the app seems to be just allocating it or forwarding it to Veolia. I experienced the same problem, sometimes they say "solved" even though I see the rubbish there for days and days. And yes, I see people dumping rubbish, stealing planters, etc every week (I report as much as I can, and sometimes I feel like a waste of time
but I think there are many people like us, who care about the area we live in and try...lets not give up! one question is...there are a few houses near mine with front garden completely full with rubbish...are they allowed?

I have posted numerous times via the app. More as a record of how frequently a flytipper on our street dumps their stuff, which I have been able to catch on camera and have happily reported to the council.
I have always imagined some semi conscious drone at Veolia going through a CRM system and ticking all as 'Solved' at the end of each work day, once the street sweeps have done their duties.

I hesitate to suggest gaming the system but I've found that if you tweet Haringey, Veolia and Claire Kober it gets sorted way faster than via the app... you need to say where the rubbish is (and they will try to refer you back to using the app in future)

In fairness responsibility for rubbish is Veolia's, not HC as HC have a contract to deal with this with Veolia. Funny enough I have just emailed Emine Ibrahim and Zena Babarzon, two of our ward Councillors, about exactly this (lack of) proactive intervention. I reported purple Veolia bags as left uncollected several days ago.
To their credit both Councillors responded and chased Veolia.
The bags around the passage on Pemberton were taken by yesterday, the second image shows bags at the passage on Mattison yesterday morning still uncollected after the best part of 4 days.
I am a regular user of the Haringey Ap, and sadly it needs more folks to do the same- perhaps to have the rubbish currently falling into Wightman Road that is being run over and ground into the road dealt with for example.
My biggest bug bear though is the same as yours Paulie. The last image shows rubbish at the top of Pemberton that has been there a week or more, and was still there yesterday. Every time a Veolia van goes past it they neglect an opportunity to stop and pick it up. Instead it will sit there until someone is moved to do something about it, but usually not before it has attracted more dumped rubbish in the hope the faeries will deal with it. I have not reported it, as I want to see how long it sits there and how bad it gets before it is dealt with.

That they have a contract with Veolia does not absolve the council of responsible I'm afraid. It was their decision to sub contract to the firm after all. We don't pay Veolia to keep our roads clean - we pay the council.

I was not trying to absolve them, in fact I was sympathising?!...
The difficulty tough is that not enough of our neighbors are prepared to do anything about it. Until we do collectively nothing will change.

Is that pile of rubbish still there? I also recognise the overloaded nappy. What a disgrace. Just how is it possible that one crosses the railway track from the ladder to crouch end and the rubbish magically disappears?????

It disappears because the locals there give a shit and are rightly more vocal and on their elected officials. Squeeky wheels. There may also be less dumping in the first place of course...
The load at the top of Pem was there as of last night, have not been pasted again today. Will keep checking it though.

Anyone in the mood to grab a camera, record what it looks like on their own street and then post it on here? If we all did it on the same day and posted it on a thread would could forward the whole thing to Cllr Ahmed as cabinet member for environment. Any takers?

Been actually toying with the idea of creating a Facebook group "Rubbish of Harringay" where we collect the finest examples of rubbish and name and shame. That should attract enough publicity for the council to consider changing their stance. They only would once things go broadly public and reputations are at stake.
