'Slot machine prizes double as gambling rules relaxed'

Prizes will double to £70 and the maximum stake will rise from 50p to £1. It is the second rise in two years.

Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary agreed to the increases because "many operators across the gambling industry are finding trading conditions very difficult in the present economic climate".

This decision comes as the number of machines being manufactured has fallen by 55 per cent since 2005 and revenue in arcades has dropped by 21 per cent since June 2007.

It would be more impressive if Andy Burnham, the Culture Secretary agreed to the decreases because "many mothers and children across the country, are finding living conditions very difficult in the present economic climate".

And because some husbands and fathers gamble away their wages. To the extent that abuse happens, Mr Burnham will be adding to it.

I remain astonished that this Government continues to look out first for producers rather than consumers, for companies rather than families, for lobbyists rather than the voiceless, for the short term rather than the long term, for the rich rather than the poor ...
