Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Paying a visit to Stroud Green and Harringay Library, I had a little look at the mahonia to see if there were any insects I could bother. At this time of year, there's not a lot to see but mahonia, beloved of municipal gardeners everywhere, is an excellent rich food and therefore worth peering at when you pass.

I was rewarded with my first bumblebee of the year.

I think this is probably a buff-tailed queen, newly emerged and feeding herself up in order to lay eggs. She is very early to emerge though!

Nice pic Liz. Daffs pushing through as well.

Nice pic Liz, I'm sure I saw same lady (along with a honey bee!) just the other day - I doubt if they'll be out today...

I've been told that the mahonias smell so strong they wake the bumble bees out of hibernation prematurely. The bumblebees pollinate the mahonia but are then likely to be killed off by the wintery weather. Good for the mahonia, not so good for the bumble bee! If it's true...
