Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Last week the developers for the old M&S building on Wood Green High Road put on an exhibition which gave a peek of the future.

Showing off their ten storey development of 44-46 High Road,  the company told one of the locals who attended that this was just the start. They said we could expect the whole High Road to look the same within a a couple of decades.

Good thing or bad?

Hmm I don't know how I feel about this... Im all for the redevelopment of the site but I feel rather uncomfortable with this design. I would have preferred the actual building being redeveloped rather than the land behind it. I would not be surprised if the shopfront just becomes an entrance to the flats behind, if this is the case then perhaps it takes away from the high street as opposed to enhancing it.

Not convinced i'd  like a high rise in front of my house.

Just thinking the same thing.  The view the people living on the road parallel to the high street is pretty grim but at least they see the sun now and then but with this.......

Is the existing building Art Deco?

This is it on Google Street View. The store opened in 1938. So, assuming the building that's there now is the 1938 building, it came right at the end of the art deco period.

From the look of it, particularly in the 1958 photo below, it seems to have been influenced by art deco, but in some respects it's quite conservative and I don't think it could be considered an important art deco building.

Here are some pictures Liz posted of the interior in 1948.

At ground level the four chromed, fluted pillars give more of the Art Deco flavour than the rest of the building, to my eye.

Something not right with that facade..

Is that repaired war damage that can be seen?

Quite possibly, according to the Bomb Sight mapping of WW II bombs (blitz only, not V1 or V2).  http://www.bombsight.org/bombs/25218/

where M&S is the grey box.

More high rise buildings and even denser living when there is already so little sunlight will make Wood Green more unpleasant I think. I can't see it encouraging more footfall as the council claims it will. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/dec/24/new-york-retail-sh...
