Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I picked up some Twitter stirrings last night of something having happened around the passageway by Sydney Road.  Having asked a few questiopsn of local Tweeters, I'm very sad to report that there appears to have been a serious sexual assault in the Passage between Sydney Road and Turnpike Lane during the early hours of Sunday morning. I'm told that the police are appealing to anyone who might have seen/heard anything to contact them.

Sad, sad news.

What's that supposed to mean John? Everyone who isn't from the UK is to blame for the problem?

The only way we can solve the problem is to Police it, what's the point of a march when the idiots you are directing your message at don't even care.
John_D can speak for himself. But as a general point, it is valuable for people to have spaces where they can raise and discuss their views and concerns about the stresses - as well as the strengths - of having migrating and 'churning' populations. Possibly, a website thread is not the best place, and face-to-face discussion is more sensible.
The problem with face-to-face spaces, as you know from your own experience Alan, is getting people to them.
Liz, I'd be happy to accompany you to any public meetings and show my support.

Thank you both. I am sure that Cllr Canver would also be very supportive. We would be picking up from where we left off here. As I said David Lammy's office were also very supportive in getting dialogue going with the Borough Commander.

Just to suport what Kit says above to John D, we don't have to see it as part of living around here. We have a duty to challenge the false assumptions that women are 'fair game' if they are out late, or young, or having fun, or simply on their own minding their own business.

In terms of being informed about these crimes, if you are not a member of your local Neighbourhood Watch then it makes sense to join it, or start one. NW Coordinators forward information from the Police so that residents ARE aware when things like this happen and can then act accordingly. This is the email I received, via my Neighbourhood Watch group, sent by the Met.

Dear All

Keeping you updated
. Detectives are investigating a rape in Haringey Passage, near Turnpike Lane N8

On Sunday 30 january 2011 at about 2.35am, a 26 year-old woman was walking along Haringey Passage from Turnpike Lane.

In the section between Turnpike Lane and Sydney Road N8, a man approached the woman, assaulted and raped her.
The suspect is described as wearing dark clothing
LAS and police attended, the woman was taken to the North Middlesex hospital and discharged the same day.
Officers from The Metropolitan Police Sapphire Unit investigate.

Enquiries continue.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the incident room on 020 8345 4326, or to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Haringey police are fully supporting the ongoing investigation being carried out by specialist officers in the Met police Sapphire unit. Harringay Safer Neighbourhoods Team officers are carrying out high visibility reassurance patrols during the day and response team officers are paying extra attention to the area during night time patrols.

There are sensible precautions everybody can take to ensure their general safety whilst out and about.

= Think ahead and plan your journey, avoiding deserted areas.

= Avoid walking alone at night, and keep to well-lit main roads where possible.

= Avoid short cuts like alleyways, waste ground and wooded, bushy areas.. If you do walk through a park ensure you stay on well-lit, main paths where there are other people around.

= If you regularly go jogging or cycling, try to vary your route and time.

= Stay alert: be aware of what's going on around you.

= It is always worth letting someone know where you are going, the route you intend to take and when you expect to return.

= Try to avoid wearing headphones - your ability to hear traffic, strangers or potential trouble is severely restricted.

= Be vigilant, if you are using your mobile phone stay alert to those around you.

= If you have a personal attack alarm it should be carried in your hand to use immediately if necessary.

= If you think someone is following you, check by crossing the street
more than once if necessary to see if the person follows. If you are still worried, get to the nearest place where there are other people and call the police.

= Walk facing the traffic so a car cannot pull up behind you unnoticed.

= If a car stops and you are threatened, scream and shout, and set off your personal attack alarm if you have one. Run away in the opposite direction to which the car is facing so that it is difficult for them to follow you.

= Don’t hitch-hike or take lifts from strangers."

Excellent point, Laura. Healthy, non-dormant Neighbourhood Watches in tandem with SNT, HOL, LCSP and/or other RAs would be ideal sources of deterrence and information.

Too often serried ranks of NW signs along streets are like CCTV cameras without film. Totem poles don't work any magic if there are no braves to  dance around them occasionally.
