Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Warning to the ladies here...
There seems to be a pattern and you never know if it could be dangerous or escalate in some way. I thought it was worth putting out a little warning on here as well seeing as some people probably use Streetlife too.
My original post:
So today, I got a disgusting phone call from a private number. Naturally, I put the phone back only for this man to call back again to tell me he's playing with himself.
I've figured out he must have got my phone number from a post here on Streetlife. I know I'm right as he asked if I was Victoria... A few weeks ago I recommended my friend, Victoria, on a post requesting cleaners. Only I accidentally wrote down my number instead of my friends!
This is the only explanation for how he got my phone number as it is relatively new and only a few close friends / family have it.
I know we are all quite comfortable on here and happy to give out our numbers but it did creep me out a little bit so thought I would warn others or ask if this has happened to anyone else on here??
Originally a warning to women but who knows, maybe men should be warned too! : )

Oh, that's unpleasant. Have you reported it to the police?
I only use my mobile phone but I am quite careful who I give the number to. I'd only share it in a PM here.
More difficult is when we give out other people's numbers like for cleaners and tradespeople. I don't know what to suggest in this case - obviously if we want to recommend someone and that's their preferred method of contact then we should give the number out. Some people really are nasty.
I may PM re Victoria's number - I'm thinking of getting a cleaner though I live in a one bed flat on my own so am trying to convince myself it's not too much of an extravagance!

W****s like him always withhold their number. It's a shame they can't extended their restraint to other things.

Thank you for a timely reminder for anyone using the site not to post telephone numbers or house numbers in the public forum. We have always encouraged members to use the private messaging system to share information and will remove numbers and other personal info from posts where we spot it. . In the case of businesses etc, clearly there has to be a way to communicate with them but with self-employed or single person small business it is wise to be cautious about posting their details. Again we encourage the use of the private message system.

... Always best not to use your real name also. its amazing how one piece of information can give away everything about you online to an oddball with sufficient time on their hands,
Even the same forum nick names can cause real security problems as odd balls can trace you back to a post you made once somewhere else with too much info about yourself for your own good.

I use a whistle which I blow down the phone to discourage unwanted callers, usually stubborn sales people and not (thankfully) dirty callers. It'll at least leave a ringing in his ears.

I don't know if you use a BT landline or not, but if you do they have a service called "choose to refuse" which enables you to block numbers; I use it for PPI and "accident claim" nuisance callers, mostly. Once you've had a call, you dial a code that blocks subsequent calls from the same number. BT do charge for it - now there's a surprise - but I don't think it's very much (included in my call package, so not exactly sure, but about £1 a month I think). Obviously no use on withheld numbers, but can be quite good for other calls, though persistent scammers (the phoney IT experts, for instance) use multiple faked numbers. Worth a try, maybe?

Actually I think it works for withheld numbers too if my memory serves. It's a very useful thing to have.

You need to be a bit careful about blocking all withheld number. People ringing via a switchboard can show as number withheld. You might want some of these (delivery companies for instance)
