Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Manor House and Finsbury Park Stations will be two of the 80 stations named to carry free wifi for the Olympics this summer.

Transport for London said this would be the UK's first "deep-level" network to provide wireless internet to the public.

Testing it at an undisclosed location, the BBC's Rory Cellan said "It seemed very fast, with the video streaming without any buffering. Rather better, in fact, than I get on my home broadband. And a quick speedtest carried out on a TFL employee's tablet computer showed download speeds of over 25Mbps."

The cost of installing and running the network is part of the commercial contract so it’s not coming out of taxes nor will there be any increase in fares as a result.

After the Olympics Virgin, who have been awarded the contract plan to offer a free online portal providing up to date travel information, while internet access will be available as part of Virgin broadband and Virgin Mobile packages or on a pay-as-you-go basis for everyone else.

The Londonist have published the list of all 80 stations so far disclosed.

Thanks to Mark Brandon for tipping me the wink on this.

The first wifi enabled stations are live:

  • Euston
  • Green Park
  • King’s Cross St. Pancras
  • Oxford Circus
  • Victoria
  • Warren Street

Do we really need Wifi on the Tube? That money spent on this project could be better used to help cut delays on the network.
