Witanhurst
A SHORT way west of the Borough lies London's biggest house (not counting Buckingham Palace).
Renovations are mainly done, but the mystery of its beneficial ownership continues. An article in the latest New Yorker magazine also puts the influx of foreign money – in property – into a wider London context.

I have heard it said, on good authority from people that have worked in the building, that you can literally get from one end of the building to the other via a series of inter-wall passages.

When I worked for Camden planning, some ten years ago, the true ownership of Witanhurst was a mystery no one was able to solve. It constantly passed through a series of companies, seeming set up specifically for the purpose of obfustication, but variously seemed to have Saudi and then Russian owners.

The New Yorker did solid research for their article; the 'mystery' is also covered in yesterday's Mail and briefly, in the Times. When I read the daughter-in-law's boast that she is too pretty to work, I couldn't help thinking of the condition of some pensioners I once saw on Nevsky Prospekt in St Petersburg.

A classic piece of investigative journalism. If only the local papers could afford such work - getting to the bottom of some of the dodgy deals done with developers could show up more than FoI requests can. Takes time, and money, and the preparedness to schmooze - or to go to Cannes to eavesdrop.
