Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've just seen from Woodberry Wetlands website that they are closed on several Saturdays over this summer. Anyone know why? I suspect they may be hiring it out for weddings etc but if so it seems a shame to close the whole place, not just the cafe.

It could be for works, but why not do that on a weekday rather than weekend when most people want to visit?

Their website says you can hire the whole site on a Saturday or Sunday from noon till 11pm (for weddings presumably) but this can only happen 6 times a year.  If I were going to splash the cash on a big wedding like that, I'd want the whole site too, and I'm sure it costs a fair whack!

From Woodberry Wetlands, in response to my query: 'At Woodberry Wetlands we need to generate income that allows us to keep the nature reserve running. That does mean that we occasionally need to run private events, which bring in the money that allows us to run the reserve. Summer is a particularly popular time for such events. We could charge the public to enter the reserve, but we strongly believe that entrance should be free to all, as long as we can afford to do that.'

It's four Saturdays, one Sunday and a Friday. Personally I don't think they should be closing to the public on a summer weekend.

I think that they need to do what they need to do to raise funds to run the place, and if that means being inaccessible for 6 days a year, then it is what it is.  People aren't going to book it for a wedding in the middle of winter when the whole point of the place is the outside.  It's a charity and I agree with them that it's better that it's free to visit but occasionally closed for events, than they charge for entry.  There are plenty of other open spaces to visit in the area.

I enjoy Woodberry Wetland several times a week as I run through on my way to work. They never get any money from me as the cafe isn't open then (though I do really want to go to one of their volunteer days if I hear about it in time). I'm not going to begrudge them a few closures due to the need to raise funds and look after the wildlife. It's a magnificent facility and it's so well looked after.

We had an absolutely delicious lunch there yesterday, so i would heartily recommend the cafe.
