Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The day before the concert in 1949, at Seymour Hall near Marble Arch. Jusuf Dadoo, the South
African activist is to his left in the front row and the MP Tom Driberg stands at the far right.

A few years back we published a notice about a concert given by legendary black American singer Paul Robeson in 1949.

I've just got hold of an original programme for that concert and am attaching a copy here.

Nice one! and thanks too to Liz for finding the original notice. I played the youtube clip of him singing "Old man River" and floods of memories came back to me, as my family too greatly admired Robson. My mother went to "hear" him in the Royal Albert hall in 1954 where his supporters had organised a Transatlantic Concert transmitted over telephone wires and played over loudspeakers in the hall while he was singing into a mic in America as he had been banned from leaving the USA, when they took away his passport, during the crackdown against progressive artists. I was born the following year and she called me “Paul” in honour of him!

Michael Anderson has established that the Marx Museum in Clerkenwell have a Robeson collection and were keen to get hold of a copy of his brochure. So I've just sent them a full sized unwatermarked copy.

Second museum this year helped out by the HoL archive. Nice that.
