Nilgun's Interview with HoL:

From Haringey Council Website:

I have been a Labour Party councillor in the London Borough of Haringey since 1998 and the Cabinet Member, holding the Crime and Community Safety portfolio, since May 2002. I have also held the position of Vice-Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Chair of the Equalities Scrutiny Panel, Chair of the South Tottenham Area Housing Forum and Chair of Green Lanes Strategy Group.

My politics are driven by my desire to make a positive difference to the lives of local residents. In 2001, I led on the first ever multi-agency Domestic Violence best value review in the country. I have championed domestic violence, hate crime and anti-social behaviour issues and was the driving force behind the establishment of the 'Hearthstone', Haringey’s pioneering multi-agency domestic violence advice and support centre, and the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Action Team.

I have a BA Hons in English and American Literature and a professional background in the voluntary sector, teaching and local government. I have wide experience of policy formulation and implementation at both corporate and service levels. My experience extends to policy issues around social inclusion and equalities, community cohesion, regeneration, housing, creating opportunities for young people and community safety.

I successfully completed the Warwick University and Audit Commission/I&DeA, Modern Members 'Leadership Academy' course in 2002. In 2005 – 06 I chaired the ALG (currently known as London Councils) Crime and Public Protection Panel and Forum - a key role in London government, through which I also sat on the London Crime Reduction Board chaired by the Deputy Police Commissioner. I also published articles in the London Bulletin on Anti-Social Behaviour and Domestic Violence. At present I represent Haringey Council at London level as the Vice Chair of the London Councils Grants Committee and as a member of the Crime Panel. I also represent the Association of Labour Councillors on the Labour Party National Policy Forum Sustainable Communities Commission.

Simon's interview with HoL:

From Simon Hester:

I am a candidate for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) – a new loose electoral coalition to challenge the establishment consensus.

I am 52 years old and have lived here since 1991. I am a construction site inspector and accident investigator working for the Health and Safety Executive. My partner teaches at CONEL. My daughter went to Chestnuts Primary and now attends Park View Academy. One stepson is at university, the other doing A-levels at Haringey 6th form Centre. I am committed to Tottenham.

I am standing as a councillor in St Ann’s ward to offer a real alternative. If you elect me I will do my best to organise resistance, to prevent our services being slashed and to save local jobs. I am a campaigner and an activist, not a careerist.

It is not true that public services have to be cut to reduce the government’s financial deficit. With the political will it would be relatively easy to raise over £300 billion by taxing corporations and the richest people and by rejecting the military demands for even more hardware.

The money is there for decent education, health and housing for everybody. Where the money is spent is a political choice. Public services and many thousands of jobs are being threatened to keep the wealthy afloat and to keep the banks happy.

I helped to organise the campaign to prevent the Laurels Health Centre being privatised. Over many years I have campaigned and worked to improve our area on many, many issues.

I have been a candidate twice before, coming second to Labour on both occasions. The Tories and Lib Dems have no chance in St Ann’s ward.

Immediate issues for St Ann’s ward as I see it are:

  • We need more jobs, not less. The council must employ many more people to combat the recession.
  • The council must publicly oppose cuts at CONEL.
  • We need properly staffed and permanent facilities for our young people, not short term projects. Without well-financed youth clubs, sports facilities and (above all) job opportunities is it any wonder too many young people hang out on the streets, get harrassed by the police and end up in trouble?
  • St Ann’s Hospital is being run down and wards closed without any consultation. We need a serious local discussion and a community plan to regenerate the hospital.
  • We need a blanket 20mph speed limit across Haringey.
  • We need new pelican crossings on Black Boy Lane (near Cranleigh Rd), on Cornwall Road (near Gorleston Rd) and on St Ann’s Road (near the library).
  • In the winter too many elderly people were unable to get out because the pavements were not cleared. We need more street cleaners and Grit Bins on street corners.
