Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Down local train at Harringay West

View southward, towards Finsbury Park and King's Cross. The train, probably for all stations to Hatfield, is typically made up of two Gresley 'quad-arts' (four coach bodies sharing bogies - articulated) headed by a Gresley N2/2 0-6-2T (No. 69536). On the far side are the Goods lines leading into Ferme Park Down Yard; the footbridge above, led from the Station entrance to a favourite path for train-watching. Taken 3 April 1958

That favourite path for train spotters was Known as the 'Hogs Back'. It was also a pleasant walk through, and had the occasional park seat along its route, enabling one to rest, have a snack, and admire the views. All very civilised, and a reminder of the sense of freedom and rights of way we had in those days. In 2012 I revisited and tried to find what was once the entrance to this little haven for us kids. Sadly it no longer exists, and I felt sorry that todays kids could not experience that sense of unfettered feedom.

Humm I remember that footpath quite well when delevering the shoes to Denton or Ridge just before dusk. I also remember the lamp-lighter lighting the oil? lamps on the footbridge. I remember Channings  with the John Bull advert here[ with a former footpath ], and the phone box with the A & B buttons and the please 'shew' all tickets and the brass handrail on the bridge, the signal-box, and various other things like the burned-out station. This was all prior to the buildingof blocks of flats along the railway emankment at Ridge & Mountview & before the W5 bus route linking the station- then Harringay West, to Archway or to Harringay Stadium as was.

Yes, 'shew' all tickets! I remember the timber going up at that wall to stop it all sliding down the hill!
