Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Not a great shot, but the only one I can find of the Ever Ready building on the corner of St Ann's Rd and Warwick Gardens. Dated 1971.

This was the centre of the company's research. Originally know Central Laboratories, it was later referred to as Group Technical Centre.

The company spent heavily on research and development: 250 people worked in the Harringay laboratory.

It was closed in 1984, as part of the far-reaching cuts after the takeover by Hanson plc.

Brilliant. Thanks Geoff. Pretty substantial. Would have made great flats. So many Sixties buildings architecture were so full of light.

So, it looks like this building was a post-war one.

This is a later building than the one I knew as a kid.. I had forgotten it was replaced in the sixties !

Notice the pavement solution of a concrete strip to enable cars to park on the pavement..

Notice also the beautiful mark I Capri... Back when Harringay was classy.

...and isn't that a Benz in the background too?

John you read my mind about the Capri...  I think the current block of flats, though a bit bland, are better than this block and there is more greenery now on that corner.

I passed my driving test in a Mk 1 Capri. A bronze one, natch.

Ah, just found this photo having commented on another thread. It's much bigger than I imagined.

Yes Ruth I understand.. but when the factory went that was a loss of 'good' jobs locally.. about 100? ..200?
Comment by Geoff Amabilino on September 7, 2011 at 21:18
Central Labs had a workforce of about 250 people.  Not all local of course, but mostly from Haringey, Hackney, Barnet, Enfield etc.  Then add in the loss of trade to local businesses...
