Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hornsey High St from Rectory Gardens, circa 1905

This shows the western end of Hornsey High Street. Just to the right of the shops is Middle Lane. The street cutting through the terrace of buildings in the centre of the picture is Birkbeck Road.

Behind the photographer stood the rectory. Whilst that was replaced with housing in around 1960, the "recreation ground" space remains an open space today.

I'd always thought that "Hornsey Recreation Grounds" referred to what we now call Priory Park. This postcard suggests that it may in fact have had a wider application or it could be that the postcard company just got it wrong.

Are you sure it is not Wightman Road, circa March 2016- that looks like Dick Harris in the front...

Very funny.  He looks to me more like my monkey's uncle, Czar Nicholas II.

I think you'll find that the old Rectory wasn't demolished until the 1960's to make way for the school. Got caught by the Rector scrumping apples about 1961.

Here's another image of the same strip, taken from a bit further east and looking in the other direction.

the picture is indeed rectory gardens and was not part of priory park. I played there as a boy, at that time it was mostly asphalt. I was born in nearby westfield rd in 1946 and lived there till the houses were demolished in about 1970 . Are there any pictures of westfield rd? I would love to see any.

There may be,  John, but I'm afraid that I don't have any.
