I just realised it's not just the absence of cars that make it look wider... it's the absence of trees too!

I grew up in the house on the far right next to the Dairy sign.  No dairy on the corner in my day but there was a Jolly's grocers shop that sold bread, cheese, dried fruit, cured meat and tinned stuff, rather like a delicatessen of today.
