Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Enterprise dumped for Veolia by Haringey Council

A frisson of excitement (or is it trepidation?) at the Community Volunteer news desk as we learn that council waste contractors, Enterprise, are to be replaced by Veolia beginning in mid-April.

The company was chosen from a final shortlist of two at a meeting of the council’s cabinet on Tuesday, January 25 and the contract between Haringey council and Veolia, who will deliver recycling, refuse, and street cleansing services for the next 14 years, is now being finalised.

My refuse collector is usually very well informed. I can't wait for the fines for not recycling...

Oh dear. That just seems really drastic...once-a-week rubbish collection just seems such a basic service - but agreed on the fines, if they can actually enforce them!

Thanks for the link. I expect this will be a disaster for streets like mine where every 'house' is a maisonette and all have gardens. There wouldn't be the physical space to fit an extra wheelie bin in our (shared) front garden, for example, and if I'm reading their proposal correctly, we would in actual fact need an additional two to accommodate both flats' rubbish.

 

I wonder how they are defining 'house' and what exceptions will be made for flats.

Your rubbish man appears to have got it wrong about fortnightly collections for recycling, John, according to Adrian's link. 

Just to be sure, I've dropped a line to Cllr Canver asking about it, and about the possibility of fines for not recycling. Can't think how this announcement about rubbish passed me by. I'm taking my eye off the ball, for sure...

Thanks for doing that Liz! I do wonder how they will define 'flats' though, as it can be really hazy, particularly with the prevalence of (dare I say it) HMOs.

I did question him on the recycling as the food waste bins are going to be a bit of an issue out in the sun for two weeks in June. He just made is "ah, I'm always right" sign with his finger and we left it at that. I personally not so cock-a-hoop about the two weekly recycling, fines for not recycling is a big thumbs up from me though.

I switched to a smaller wheelie bin as I was putting out so much recycling that I didn't need a big one for rubbish - might have to switch back again if it becomes fortnightly.  And will they be offering a choice of smaller-size recycling bins - I do fill the green box every week, sometimes to overflowing, but if they are still collecting recycling weekly I see no need to change to an enormous wheelie bin.

Surely we should be encouraged to create less rubbish/recycling overall, rather than just increasing the size of the containers - though I do understand that wheelie bins are better for the collectors, they are hard to store and I find them heavy to manouevre once filled.

I live in a block of 16 flats where we share 6 ordinary bins and two recycling bins. These bins are accessible from the street too. How will they know who is not recycling ? How will they know that the burger carton in the ordinary bin wasn't dumped by someone off the street ?

Good point although watching the street cleaning man this morning having to drag his own personal wheelie bin past all the ones in people's front gardens was a little heartbreaking. If I pick up rubbish in the street I put it in the nearest person's rubbish bin, I guess that'll have to stop... Hmmm... unintended consequences?

With admirable speed Cllr Canver has replied, with the following reply which should be read alongside the council press release


"You’ll see from the attached [press release] that in the first year there will be a comprehensive engagement programme. No change. Starting from Jan 2012 fortnightly residual waste collection will be phased in across Haringey starting from where there is the highest recycling rate namely from Muswell Hill. This method of collection will only apply to street properties on residential roads. Rubbish from estates and main roads will still be collected as it is currently programmed. There won’t be any change there.

 

All recyclables will continue to be collected every week. 240lt recycle bins will be introduced where physically possible. We aim to achieve 50% recycling rate by 2015. No fines associated, (my italics) on the contrary very much carrot approach has been adopted and there will be incentives introduced in the first year and on. These and the village approach adopted in street sweeping will contribute to our target of reducing carbon emissions by 40% by 2015."

Liz, aren't you being just a teensy bit of a . . . well, spoilsport?

I mean, was it really necessary to write and actually ask Cllr Nilgun Canver? And then to post her reply? <sigh> People were having such fun speculating.
