Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

New "golden" telephone number for all Haringey libraries begins 16 December

Library Services, now part of Customer Services, are moving to a golden telephone number:

020 8489 4560

What does this mean?

It means that all of our  nine library contact numbers will now be routed into one number. Customers will be able to access services in a more structured way, and will be able to get the service they wish to access by selecting the relevant option on the telephone. Existing phone numbers will continue to work for the foreseeable future.

This means customers wishing to renew their items, obtain information regarding library opening times, or speak to an advisor will need only dial one number.

Why has this changed?

Library Services is now part of Customer Services. They want to make it easy for existing library members and new customers wishing to become members to access library services. Telephone contact will now be handled by the Customer Services Contact Centre (Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, with calls routing back to Library Services outside of these hours). This will give the local library staff time to focus on face to face service delivery during the daytime.*

When is this happening?

Library Services telephone calls and emails will be transferring into Customer Services from

16 December 2014

*Apparently staff are being specially trained for the library line

I didn't have this exact number until I saw this Harringay online link but I found the process took twice as long as it would have. I needed to speak to someone and I was asked twice for my membership number and there seemed to be quite a few mins of delay, not to mention two lots of automated blather you have to listen to first. This kind of thing only annoys customers. It's typically disingenuous to describe it as a 'golden number'.

The wording is the council's - the quotation marks mine. For the reasons you outline I have my suspicions there will be nothing valuable about this change but we shall see.

The person I spoke to seemed to imply, in not so many words, that the staff weren't managing, but in recent years I have found them excellent. Perhaps they are reducing staff numbers and 'needing' to reduce staff tasks.

They are- all library staff are required to re-apply for their jobs in April due to 're-structuring' and some of them will be made redundant. They may not be closing libraries but there are significant changes to how the service will run in the pipeline.
